Let x represent the envelope and y also represent the stamp
So, x+y=$2.50
For the envelope i.e x to cost 2 more than the stamp i.e y
We have x=y+2
By forming a simultaneous equation
x+y=2.50...eqn 1
x=y+2...eqn 2
Put x into eqn 1
So we now have
(y+2)+y=2.50
y+2+y=2.50
2+2y=2.50
2y=2.50-2
2y=0.50
Divide both sides by 2
y=0.25
Therefore, y which represent stamp is $0.25

The envelope is now 4.50 minus the stamp amount which is 2.50 .... So therefore 4.50-2.50=2.00 ...the stamp is 2.00
